LEE COUNTY - There are 12,000 Southwest Florida students can now look it up. A local organization invested tens of thousands of dollars into every third grader in Lee County. More than 800 Rotary Clubs of Lee County members supplied those 12,000 dictionaries to the students.
"We change children's lives. This is our 10th year to do this, the first year we did it--we have those students graduating from high school this year," said Steven Hawks, Chairman of the Rotary Clubs of Lee County.
For a decade, Rotary Clubs of Lee County have been passing out more than just books to third graders. They've been passing out books that help them understand other books. "We're switching our kids from learning how to read, to reading to learn. They need to understand advanced vocabulary and multi-meaning words - to have a dictionary as a resource. When they're reading a challenging book, to have a dictionary as a reference is so significant," said third grade teacher Amy Mayer.
Teachers say third grade is a critical time to develop good writing skills. They're grateful for the books.
And "gratitude" was the new word for some Allan Park Elementary students. And when third grader Paige Peterson was asked if she and the other students had some gratitude Friday she said, "Yes, because we're getting dictionaries today and a lot of classes might not have dictionaries."
